🎹 Jazz Piano Skills – Weekly Recap | Stars Fell on Alabama (Melodic Analysis)
Welcome to this week’s Jazz Piano Skills Recap Video. If you’re a member, this video brings everything we studied last week into clear focus. If you’re new, welcome—this recap gives you a look inside how we study jazz standards at Jazz Piano Skills.
This month we’re exploring the great jazz standard “Stars Fell on Alabama.”
Two weeks ago, we began with a harmonic analysis, studying the form, chord changes, harmonic function, and voicings. This past week, we shifted our focus to a melodic analysis, where everything starts—and ends—with the melody.
In this recap, Dr. Bob Lawrence demonstrates how we:
Transcribed the melody by ear
Identified the five musical phrases within the tune
Isolated the melodic guide tones (target notes)
Applied harmony and melody together to create expressive interpretations
You’ll hear the melody and harmony demonstrated in three different styles:
🎶 Ballad (slow, expressive, nostalgic)
🎶 Bossa Nova (playful, lyrical, groove-based)
🎶 Swing (up-tempo, conversational, phrase-driven)
A key takeaway from this week’s study:
Improvisation does not begin with scales—it begins with the melody.
Great jazz musicians don’t play notes; they play phrases, tell stories, and express emotion. Expression comes from clarity, not complexity. When harmony and melody are understood deeply, expression becomes natural.
Dr. Lawrence also offers practical practice advice, encouraging students to:
Practice one phrase at a time
Focus on expressive melody and simple harmony
Avoid “survival mode” thinking and play musically, not mechanically
