This week at Jazz Piano Skills, we continue our monthly tune study with a melodic analysis of “Embraceable You” by George Gershwin.
In this Weekly Recap, I review the key concepts from the podcast episode and demonstrate how to play the melody of Embraceable You using three essential jazz treatments:
• Ballad – 70 BPM
• Bossa Nova – 120 BPM
• Swing – 140 BPM
We explore:
• How to transcribe the melody by ear
• Identifying phrases and target notes
• Guide tones and melodic structure
• Developing proper jazz articulation (primarily legato)
• Applying block voicings and shell voicings to the melody
• Why rhythm transforms notes into music
As always, our goal is simple:
Discover. Learn. Play.
